Progress of filming and editing

    First of all we had a production meeting to discuss ideas for us to go and film, when, and where.

 
We planned to film our music video project over the christmas holiday. However due to various circumstance, with recurring themes. However, we have managed finally to get some filming done, however, we have not been able to get as diverse an area or as much filming as we would like. however, we have managed to find some symbolism within our shots, making the best of a bad situation.

    Our decisions were limited by time and locations, due to members of our team not having a lot of transportation outside of walking, and and a looming deadline assured that we had to take whatever footage we could grab, and worry about the quality of which later.

      On day 1 of filming we went over Hanault forest. however, due to our mistakes, instead of lip synching the full song, we only got about a minutes worth of footage per time. This means that although we got some decent footage whilst we was out, we had to go and get some more. This was fine as we had to go out and get some urban shots. There we got some shots of walking from different angles, to fit with the general theme of the song.

   To finish the first bout of filming, we went and got some shots of us in the band room, to imitate the look of people playing instruments. however, due to a minor mix up between shots,  two of the members swapped instruments, and due a filming taking place at a later date, there was a sudden change of clothing halfway through.

   Then we came to our first editing session. We were struggling to put together a coherent piece with accurate lip synching, so we had to go out and get more footage, especially of the band, since our current produce was disappointing with neither the lip synching or instrument playing being any good. However after we re-did the shots, it came out looking much better.

    We needed some more shots to amplify the feel of the music, so we went out to Valence park, and did some recording there, namely on the different pieces of equipment.  Some of this was removed from the final product for looking too out of place.

   Then came editing. As we edited, we came to several conclusions. As we edited, our band rooms, we had several problems with our footage. First of all, inconsistencies. The clothes of several of our band members changed clothes in between shots. We had to also redo our project, incorporate the new footage in with the old footage. As we edited we had two different projects. The rough, which is our testing to see how we could incorporate the different footage, and the proper project, which has refinements, as well as the final transitions.

Rough Sketch/Explanation of location and key points to note We want to film in some built up area to add pace to the scene and also a wide-open spaced area. Access to location via: We will use public transport in order to get to the location(s) that we want the film our video in. Name and number of location contact: As we are filming in a public place there is no need for a location contact.

Health and Safety Issues to note: ●      Always be careful when working on wet ground to avoid slipping. As we are in a public place there will be obstacles that we will need to avoid e.g. lamp posts and cars.

Potential Filming Problems: ●      Members of the public may cause a problem as we will have to avoid getting them in shot, which could be difficult especially in the built up locations that we were planning on filming.

Additional Notes: keep an eye on the weather forecast as we don’t want to risk damaging any camera equipment. Camera, Tripod and a monopod. Potentially a dolly

Audience research

    As we found from our research, rock bands are very popular, as well as an internal narrative, which means when we do our song, our song should be by a rock band, and we should attempt to structure some sort of narrative within the video.

Digipack

    Digipacks are book-fold paperback or card stock outer binding, with one or more plastic trays capable of CD/DVD games attached to the inside, meaning the disc comes in a a plastic case.

   This is generally used for singles or special editions, and tall DVD digipacks is used as premium packaging for DVD/sets.

   This is the outline/ basis of the digipack that we will use when it comes to designing/making ours. The general outline would be something along the lines of a band member on each panel, and an edited back and front.


Here I analysed Emenim's 8 mile.





   

As you can see the disk follows the film like sense it's giving off, showing the singer on the disk.

The cover gives of an image of toughness, implying the album is going to contain some tough, gritty tracks, and clearly appealing to it's target audience

The back also gives off depressing vibes, hinting that the contents may have some slower more depressive themes in contrast to the normally fast, aggressive pace of the artidt.

Narrative theory

   Narrative theory is the way is way the story is organised, and is generally broken down into several segments by Tzvetan Todorov
 
  Equilibrium is the balance, or peacefulness before the conflict, which then leads into the disruption, the problem which then leads to a resolution, the conflict ending by some means, creating the new equilibrium, which is not the same as the old equilibrium, as the characters and scenario have been changed due the events of the films.

   There is also a varying amount of side-plots, with typical hollywood story-lines primarily focusing on the main story, however in some films such as snatch, there is less focus on a singular overall story, and multiple sub plots.

   This can even be applied to the thriller we did previously. Our thriller is a linear product, however, ors does not have much equilibrium,ad is quickly brought to the disruption, with not enough time for a long-term resolution, and no new equilibrium, and finishes before we reach resolution, therefore our thriller is stuck in the enigma stage.

      Roland Barthes described all text are complex bundles which can be either open or closed texts, which means the ending or message is either open, meaning open to interpretation, or closed meaning that the ending is definite, not open to forms of interpretations. An open text film would be a film such as inception or total recall. Most modern hollywood films come under closed text.
     Texts that can be read in a number of ways are considers polysemic texts.
 
   Vladimir prop also states that in all movies there are 8 character roles.

Hero: Eminem
Villain: Stan

Equilibrium. though it may not be positive equilibrium, the status quo is Stan the obsessive fan. this is an example of a negative equilibrium. 

Disruption, though in this case, the disruption is more of an amplification of the equilibrium. 

The resolution is a negative resolution, making the whole theme overall negative.

  Todorov theory can be applied to this song as well. Despite being a state of turmoil, the equilibrium is that Stan is desperately trying to get Eminem to notice him. This then leads to the disruption of Eminem not noticing either his messages or his public appearances. Through a series of events, the issue is resolved when Stan kills himself and his girlfriend. the new equilibrium is that his little brother is following in his steps.

   Finally, the ending of this is an example of Roland Barthe's, open end theory, since it ends with the little brother following in his brothers footsteps, leading to possibly multiple endings to what later happens.

Michael Jackson

   Michael Jackson is reknowned for being one of, if not the most famous pop star of all time, and he's influence extends even to his music videos, being creative, and trendsetting the idea of telling a story within the music video.

    A good example of this can be seen in bad criminal.

   However, when he started out, the videos had a different feel to them.



    Back when they first started out, the Jackson 5 had a very upbeat performance, but no music video as was common for the time, and was less narrative based and aggressive as Michael Jacksons later performance.Due to this being a recording of a live performance, there is no lip[ syncing present within this video.



   Later on came Billie Jean. While not his first music video, it is a good example to show how MJ's videos changed over time. Unlike his more upbeat performances as one of the Jackson 5, this song, and especially the music video for it, were more pessimistic, as this video shows a empty, bleak rendition of America, with MJ trying to improve it via helping people, in this instance giving money to the poor. However, due to this it fits more genre conventions, such as dance moves in a music video, and amplification.



   Thriller is possibly the MJ's most famous production, costing at the time $500,000, which is nearly $2 million. To fund this, they brought out a 2 part documentary. The final product sold over 9 million copies, nearly unprecedented for the time. While different from the norm, it still fits multiple of Goodwins conventions.
